foldout vs Claude

Claude cuts the writing. foldout cuts the reading.

Claude Docs and Slides make the writing cheap, and they're good at it. They do nothing about the reading. Every page Claude writes for you still costs the person who receives it ten minutes on a phone, and most of them stop at paragraph three. That cost is the reader tax, and it lands on the people you're trying to reach. foldout is built to remove it.

Paste what Claude wroteWatch a real one first

Cheaper to write is not cheaper to read.

Ask Claude for the update and you get a good one in a minute. Eleven paragraphs, headings, complete. Send it to twelve people and you have just spent a couple of hours of other people's time, and three of them will get to the ask. Writing got cheap this year. Reading didn't, and nobody who makes writing tools is counting the other side.

foldout starts from the reader. It takes what you or Claude wrote and builds the page for how it will be read: the number set large, the ask at the top, the diagram drawn in, the whole thing finished in one screen on a phone. Two minutes each instead of fourteen, and everyone reaches the point.

The same words as a foldout page. Two minutes, and the reader has the point before they scroll.

What the reader pays, both ways

Four things every update has to do for the person receiving it. Here's what each one costs them when the doc came out of a chat, and what it costs when the page was built for reading.

The reader has to be able to open it
In Claude
  1. Export to Google Docs or Word
  2. Fix what the export did to the formatting
  3. Upload it somewhere, set the sharing
  4. Send a link to a doc, or an attachment
A doc or an attachment, opened on a phone, abandoned at paragraph three
In foldout

The page is at a public link from the first word. It opens for anyone, on any phone, no account, and it's built to be read there.

One tap, and it reads
The reader needs the number first
In Claude
  1. Ask for a summary at the top
  2. Get another paragraph, with the number in it
  3. Bold it by hand
Scrolling to find a bold number in paragraph four
In foldout

Your numbers are pulled out and set large in a band at the top, with the ask called out under them. That's what a page for an update looks like.

Seen before they scroll
The reader has to picture the plan
In Claude
  1. Ask, and get a description of a diagram
  2. Draw it somewhere else
  3. Paste in a picture of it
Three paragraphs describing a picture
In foldout

Describe it in a sentence. It's drawn into the page as a real graphic, in the page's own colours, and it stays sharp in the PDF.

One glance
The reader has to trust the version they got
In Claude
  1. Ask Claude for the fix
  2. Re-export, re-share, re-send
  3. Hope nobody forwards the old one
Two versions in circulation
In foldout

Fix it on the page. The link they already have shows the version you approved, so the reader with the old email lands on the right page.

One link, always current

This is a real page. Flip it.

A 2,900-word plan pasted in as it was, the kind of thing Claude writes well and nobody finishes. Fourteen minutes to read as a doc. Two as a page. It opens on the paste, turns into the page, and the Before / After switch at the top works.

Three more: a brainstorm into a deck · meeting notes into a summary · a spec people will read

Nothing lands on your page without a yes

Ask Claude to change the doc and the doc changes. Ask foldout and the change arrives beside the page, green for added and struck for cut. You keep it or you toss it. There is no way for the assistant to write to the page.

Where Claude is the right call

Three things Claude does that foldout doesn't try to.

  • Working out what to say. Claude is where you think. foldout starts once you know.
  • A .pptx or a Google Doc that someone else has to keep editing in their own tool.
  • Anything that must never leave the company. A private memo has no business at a public link.

Plenty of people will draft in Claude and paste into foldout. That's a good way to work: Claude for the writing, foldout for the reading.

Paste the last thing Claude wrote for you

The update, the plan, the summary. Paste it in and see what it costs to read as a page instead of a doc. If it isn't faster to get through, you've lost a minute. If it is, so has everyone you send it to.
